| | | | | | This simple project teaches the basics of cutting, pattern layout, pinning, and sewing. Our kid testers (pictured here) had a blast decorating their stockings with beads, fringe, crystals and more! Special thanks to The Beadery, Creative Crystal Co., Prym-Dritz, Hollywood Trims, Fiskars, Kunin Felt, and Wrights. You Will Need: Two 11" x 17" (28cm x 43cm) pieces of felt in main color, and one 11" x 17" (28cm x 43cm) piece of felt in contrast color Assorted fabric paints, fringe, jewels, and appliqués One 6" (15cm) length of 1/2" (13mm)-wide ribbon Thread, scissors, and glue | | | | | | Top: A job well done! Alexandra Kingsepp (age 9), Zoe Rosensweig (age 5), Alexa Zeliger (age 5), and Allison Kleshefsky (age 10) show off their finished stockings. Directly above: Ready, set, sew! All the girls learned to use the sewing machine. Here, Allison stitches the heel piece to her stocking. | | |
| | | | Zoe uses Fiskars scissors to cut out her pattern pieces. | | 1 Click here to get pattern. Print out pattern at 100% and then enlarge 200% on a photocopier; trace off cuff, toe, and heel to make separate pieces. Pin pattern pieces to felt and cut out as indicated. | | | | 2 Position cuff, toe, and heel on right side of stocking and stitch or glue in place. Do this to both stocking pieces. | | | | 3 With wrong sides together, stitch the stocking pieces together through all thicknesses with a 5/8" (15mm) seam allowance, leaving the top edge open. | | | | 4 Fold ribbon in half and insert at top left edge of stocking. Stitch in place as indicated. Using fabric paint, write your name in the cuff; with glue, attach beads, crystals, fringewhatever strikes your fancy! | |
| | | | | | | | | | | Above: Work in progress. After cutting out her stocking, Alexandra uses Collins Unique Stitch glue by Prym-Dritz to attach the heel, toe, and cuff to her stocking. | | Above: Using Elmers Galactic Glue, Zoe attaches fringe, courtesy of Hollywood Trims by Prym-Dritz, and colorful crystals, courtesy of The Beadery and Creative Crystal Co. to her stocking. | Illustrations by Clovia Ng Photographs by Ben Ostasiewski | |
